Abstract

Project entitled “STANDARDS, SYNERGIES and SUPPORT – Establishing a shared Quality Assurance Framework and Standards for Online Learning and Teaching”, is proposed with an overarching goal to establish, implement, and promote guidelines and benchmarking criteria that reference internationally accepted standards for online virtual teaching and learning (VTL) within the local Hong Kong context. Following are identified as project goals:

Critically important to the success of the IICA project has been undertaking research and a benchmark exercise on evidence-based practice for existing standards to inform the design of a standards-based quality assurance framework on online virtual teaching and learning (VTL) tailored specifically to the Hong Kong context and underpinned by robust and transparent quality assurance and enhancement mechanisms and procedures in the systematic adoption of online VTL.

Furthermore, a systematic review and content analysis of each institution’s policy statements, practice guidelines and policy documents on eLearning has allowed us to develop a classification model and mapping scheme by drawing comparisons of each of the institution’s key thematic dimensions, domains, or elements specific to the context of online teaching and learning. Finally, it is envisaged that the standards developed could serve as a guiding framework that offers the flexibility of adapting, modifying, and applying the developed framework to each university’s own distinct identity, philosophy, and culture, thereby allowing the institution to build its own capacity in respect to strategically driving and supporting quality online virtual teaching and learning delivery and governance.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has prompted swift and radical changes in e-learning adoption locally and globally. Most, if not all, teachers explored and experimented with new teaching practices during emergency remote teaching (ERT). In this regard, learning opportunities are not confined to brick-and-mortar education but are expanded with greater spatial and temporal flexibility. Against this backdrop, this inter-institutional project, “Establishing Effective Virtual Teaching Strategies to Support Learning Beyond the Classroom,” led by Prof. Paul Lam and collaborated with three partnering institutions, is established to delve into what virtual teaching and learning (VTL) strategies have been adopted to transcend learning for students in Higher Education in Hong Kong. The project investigates three areas of technology-enhanced initiatives, including new learning venues, inter-disciplinary and intercultural learning, as well as extra-curricular activities. Good practices were collected from teachers from a wide range of disciplines across four universities and were at the disposal of the wider teaching and learning communities (https://www.vtl-beyond-classrooms.com). This project is generously supported by the UGC fund of the Inter-institutional Collaborative Activities for Virtual Teaching and Learning.

Abstract

This seminar aims to equip educators with the knowledge and skills to provide efficient feedback and foster effective communication between students and teachers in in-class, out-of-class, and virtual learning environments. The workshop will begin by exploring the practical and policy implications of feedback in education, including a review of feedback policies from around the world. Participants will learn about the importance of clear, constructive, and timely feedback in promoting student engagement and learning outcomes. The seminar will introduce educators to a versatile system that facilitates various approaches to prompt feedback, including written, picture, audio, and video formats. This system enables quick and informal communication between students, teachers, and peers through messages, group messages, and discussion forums, fostering a collaborative learning atmosphere.
