Abstract

An Update: Critical Zones: Gender, Cities, and Well-Being

In this presentation Gray Kochhar-Lindgren, the Director of the Common Core at HKU, will review the progress of Critical Zones: Gender, Cities, and Well-Being, the UGC-supported project that grew out of the 2019 Outstanding Teaching Award (Teams) for Transdisciplinarity-in-Action, which included Xiao Hu (Digital Cultural Heritage and Social Data Science), Gina Marchetti (Film Studies and Comparative Literature), Mathew Pryor (Design-Thinking and Landscape Architecture), and Julian Tanner (Chemical Biology & Nucleic Acid Nanotechnology).

Organized around the UN SDGs of Good Health and Well-Being (#3), Gender Equality (#5), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (#11), Critical Zones—a term borrowed from Bruno Latour who, in turn, borrowed it from the Earth Sciences—focuses on constructing modest trajectories leading toward more flourishing futures. Engaging student peer mentors, transdisciplinary researchers, coursework, and community and global projects, Critical Zones is an attempt to contribute to local and planetary creativity.
