Inspired by narrative as both a phenomenon and a research methodology, Angela has embarked on her own narrative journey from Canada to Hong Kong where she is now the Professor and Associate Head of the School of Nursing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She was selected as one of the four distinguished nursing alumni abroad in 2005 from the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, Canada.  She has also served the role as the president for the Pi Iota Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing in 2008. Her research focuses on the person/relation-centered care underpinned by caring/human science paradigm that has evolved into an emphasis on effective and caring communication in health care and interprofessional collaborative practice. Her work on communication studies in education and practice has enabled her to work with overseas and local colleagues to improve nursing practice and serves as the Associate Director of the International Research Centre for Advancement of Health Communication in the Department of English and Communication, Poly U.  Her work on nursing education has also afforded her the opportunity to develop projects, with international collaborators, on the concept of internationalization at home for a new possibility of student exchange.

Bio

Dr. Arkers Wong is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he has been recognized for his extensive experience in nursing education, and research. He has received numerous awards for his teaching and research, including the University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award, QS Stars-Wharton Reimagine Education Awards, Faculty Team Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching, the School of Nursing Teaching Prize (Individual), Faculty Distinguished Thesis Award, and Best Research Paper Award. Dr. Wong is an active board member of the Hong Kong College of Education and Research in Nursing (HKCERN), Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine (HKJCILCM), Pi Lota Chapter, and Nursing Council of Hong Kong. Dr. Wong’s research interests include tele-health, mobile health (mHealth), primary health care, self-care, and health promotion and prevention.


Mr Timothy LAI

Bio

Mr. Timothy Lai is an Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Nursing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He currently serves as the Deputy Program Leader of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Nursing Program at the School. His research interests focus on the use of innovative technology in teaching. Mr. Lai has received several awards in recognition of his outstanding teaching and research contributions. These awards include the University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award (2023), QS Stars-Wharton Reimagine Education Regional Collaborative Team Award 2022-Asia Gold, PolyU President’s and Faculty Team Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching (2023), and PolyU President’s and Faculty Team Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Service (2022).


Dr Betty PM Chung

Bio
Dr. Betty PM CHUNG, a graduate from the University of Sydney, Australia has worked in the field of palliative and end-of-life care as practising nurse and researcher.  Her focus is particularly in psycho-social care for the dying and their families, family involvement to care delivery, good “quality of death” and well-being at old age.  She has methodological expertise in qualitative interpretation and close-to-practice approach in health sciences research.  Teaching and learning (T/L) research projects led by Betty have secured significant grants in the Areas of Excellence Scheme (AoE) and the Strategic Plan Initiatives funded by the University.  She has received awards for her teaching and research, including the University Grants Committee (UGC) Team Teaching Award  (2023) and  Faculty Team Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching (2022).

Dr Doris Y.L. LEUNG

Bio

Dr. Doris Leung is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Doris graduated and worked at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, at the University of Toronto, before moving to work at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. During that time, she taught at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels of nursing, and published widely in a number of journals about research focused on palliative end-of-life care.  Today, while she continues work with the international team and colleagues in Hong Kong, she resides in Toronto, Canada. There, she has widened her research interests with colleagues ‘at home’ and abroad, using qualitative research, to explore areas of family caregiving, and cultural sensitivity in health and social science education and research.

Abstract

As a conventional norm, the Nursing discipline tends to be perceived as a subject focusing on practical skills. Because of the increasing globalisation of our world, the IaH Team realised as early as 2015 that while more students are studying abroad under the growing emphasis on internationalisation in education, not all students have the opportunity togo overseas, given the logistics of the curriculum, time elements, and financial constraints. The team felt that an alternative model was needed. They concluded that students could potentially achieve cultural capability through the use of technology in the context of internationalisation at home; that is, students could participate in international exchange without leaving their home city. The team has created powerful new perspectives of IaH by combining peer learning as an educational approach with cross‐cultural and student‐led webinars, which have proved to be highly effective.
