The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Dr Julia Chen is the Director of the Educational Development Centre at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and also an Associate Professor (courtesy) at the Department of English and Communication. Her research interests include English Across the Curriculum, leveraging technology for advancing learning and teaching, and using learning analytics for curriculum review and quality enhancement.

She is the Project Leader of a number of inter-institutional and institutional projects related to English Across the Curriculum, and co-lead projects with Stanford University on developing an online learning platform with automatic error correction.

Bio

Grace Lim is a Teaching Fellow at the English Language Centre of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her professional interests include writing and speaking across the curriculum, discipline specific English and English for professional development in higher education. Grace has been the Project Leader of several institutional grants on English for higher education and the Co-Leader of English across the curriculum in her university. Currently, she is working on multimodal literacies and an AI interview platform for undergraduates.

Bio
Christy Chan has over 20 years of ELT experience in Australia and Hong Kong. Her professional interests include English across the curriculum, dissertation writing, and entrepreneurship education. She was the Project Leader of two institutional grants on entrepreneurship education (2015-2018) and Co-Leader of two UGC grants on English across the curriculum and establishing a professional development hub for Hong Kong university English teachers (2017-2021). Her recent research projects cover undergraduates’ multimodal literacies and hybrid intelligence in rubrics-driven teaching and learning enhancement.

Vicky Man is a Senior Lecturer at the Language Centre, Hong Kong Baptist University. Her professional interests include writing and speaking across the curriculum, pronunciation pedagogy, and World Englishes. Vicky is the recipient of multiple education awards, including the General Education Teaching Award, Faculty Performance Award in Teaching (Individual), President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching (Individual), and the UGC Teaching Award in the Collaborative Team category (Team Member).

Dr Shuk Ching Elza TSANG

Bio
Dr Elza Tsang is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Language Education (CLE), HKUST. She has been teaching and heavily involved in the development of the English curriculum for senior science students including English courses for teaching science communication and advanced academic writing. She has participated in several funded projects related to English teaching and EAC, including UGC-funded projects and TLIP projects. Elza’s academic interests include EAP/ESP genres, eLearning and reflective teaching.

Abstract

Our English Across the Curriculum (EAC) approach broadly follows the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) implemented in North America, with the aim of increasing students’ exposure to timely English learning resources without adding significantly to the curriculum. Our EAC model is aimed at involving discipline teachers to enhance students’ writing and speaking skills, as required in the various disciplinary contexts.  Main features of our EAC model includes:
